Types of Bad Backlinks To Avoid

Bad backlinks are links typically from an untrusted website. Google has been cracking down on these types of links. People are paying for links to have more clicks because it results in a higher ranking and higher authority which can pose a problem to the users due to the risks and dangers that come with it.

Types of Bad Backlinks To Avoid

How do you find bad backlinks?

There are several ways to find both free and paid backlinks. One way is to search for these through Google Search Console. Through this, you can check a list of web pages that links to your site. These links often help your SEO or Search Engine Optimization and are usually from review web pages and social media sites. However, there are shady links that may harm your SEO. Here are some questions that may help you identify bad backlinks.

What kind of website are you looking at right now?

The internet has several low-quality sites that offer hundreds of spammy links. It is likely that a malicious page is associated with it, which can put you at risk.

Does the link benefit your business?

If yes, then you can keep it. However, if the link is irrelevant and you do not want it linked to your business, then you should get rid of it.

Is there a section that tells you what the website is all about, specifically the “About Us” section?

If there are no sections that tell about the website and its developers, then there is something suspicious about it.

What to avoid

Now that you have an idea how to identify a bad backlink, here are different types of bad backlinks that you should probably avoid doing or getting into:

Duplicate Content

Guest posting on blog posts and web publications is a popular backlinking practice. It will heavily benefit your business in search engine marketing if done correctly, but it can be a disaster if done incorrectly.

Low Authority Backlinks

Authority is how Google rates a website, and the more authority you have, the more power the link will have its clicks. So try aiming for those who have a high authority to be sure that it is safe.

Blog Comments

Blog comments can help engagement in your community. Conversations that link back to a blog that explains the subject of discussion may cause natural traffic. However, blog comment links can also have adverse effects, so be careful.

Link Exchanges

Link exchange can have a small positive effect. Still, it will only benefit a small fraction of the search engine optimization benefits, and large-scale link exchanges may seem suspicious and risky.

Irrelevant Backlinks

One-off link is unlikely to gain attention, but the more irrelevant backlinks you have, the more artificial your website’s backlink profile will become. Not to mention it may get you penalized.

Advertorials

It is a prevalent method of business marketing and often an efficient one. But it isn’t effective when it comes to link building. Google has stated that backlinks that are gained from advertorials, an artificial method of link building, go against their guidelines for good practice.

Backlink Generators

Searching for a “Backlink generator” on the internet will lead you to several websites that offer free, high-quality backlinks in minutes. However, it would be best to be careful because these services use automated backlink spammers, where your links are thrown everywhere they can.

Backlink Hacking

Backlink hacking is the act of forcibly accessing a website’s codes and hiding links in it; to gain a good number of backlinks or boost a particular site. It is a dangerous and illegal act. Perpetrators, regardless of paid service or not, are heavily penalized and sometimes arrested.
