Copyrights are a big deal, and violating copyrights is an even bigger deal, so much so that the majority of social media sites – including Facebook – are super-strict when it comes to enforcement. To illustrate, if you post a song or video on your Facebook page that’s copyrighted, the holder of the copyright can send a report to the social media giant letting them know you’ve shared the song or video without permission. As a result, Facebook will automatically remove the content from your page.

Hence why some scammers are implementing phony copyright infringement alerts to deceive people into giving over their sensitive data. It’s for this reason that if you receive a message in your inbox from the Facebook Support Team that says you’ve violated their terms of service for posting copyrighted material you need to proceed with serious caution.
There’s a good chance that the email is a ruse, and the scam artists behind it are trying to get you to share your data, including your password, as well as your 2FA (two-factor authentication) code, and they’ll use your data for nefarious reasons. That’s why, as we previously stated, if you get a notification in your inbox like this, don’t even bother opening it; just delete it right away.
How the Scam Works
These types of scams aren’t new. In fact, they’ve been around for a while. Facebook users aren’t the only ones who are targeted, as the scammers behind these emails make the rounds with those major social media platform users.
Unfortunately, a lot of people who are targeted by this scam fall for it. This is because the malicious entities behind the scam use verbiage that the average person isn’t familiar with in the message to convince them that they actually are in violation of the terms of service and that violation can result in legal trouble if they don’t act fast.
Acting fast means sharing sensitive data, and the matter will be resolved, or so it is claimed. In reality, however, the scammers will take that information and use it to steal your personal information.
The following is an example of the message that you might receive:
Dear Facebook user,
We have received a lot of reports regarding the posts on your page. After conducting a review of your activity, we have determined that you are in violation of our Terms of Service. As a result, your account may be permanently suspended. If you believe this is an error, click on the link below to verify your account to confirm that your page has not violated our Terms of Service. We will review your account activity immediately and after doing so, will send you another notification via email.
To verify your account, click on the following link: (link).
What happens if you click the link?
Upon clicking on the link, you will be directed to what appears to be an authentic Facebook login page, but it isn’t. To verify your account, you’ll be asked to enter your login credentials (username/email address and your password). You will then be redirected to the real Facebook Help page.
It all seems legit, but in reality, what’s happened is that the bad actors have stolen and stored your credentials, and they’ll use the information to hijack your actual Facebook account.
How to Avoid the Scam
This phishing scam has been highly successful and a lot of people have fallen victim to it, but you don’t have to. If you ever receive a message like the one above and you’re concerned about your posts or pictures, simply log in to your Facebook account (DO NOT click on the link). If it’s a legitimate issue, the Facebook team will notify you directly through your account.
